(Reuters) \u2013kris kristofferson health<\/strong>, for decades one of the America\u2019s most critically acclaimed singer songwriters \u2013 thanks in particular to hits like \u2018Me and Bobby McGee\u2019 \u2013 and significantly a character actor too, died on Saturday at the age of 88, according to Rolling Stoneacidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristofferson had been for memory loss since 70s.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kristofferson first made his mark in the music industry as a singer-songwriter in the country music hub of Nashville, writing classics such as the Grammy winning \u2018Help Me Make It Through the Night\u2019, \u2018For the Good Times\u2019 and the powerful ballad that was the title track on the album of the same name that became the theme tune for Janis Joplin\u2019s one time lover, number one hit \u2018Me and Bobby McGee\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the early seventies he has established himself as a disproportionate singer with a growling, coarse bass voice and an extremely in demand actor, particularly opposite Barbra Streisand in the hit movie \u201cA Star is Born\u201d in 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristofferson was born in Brownsville, Texas on June, the 22nd, 1936 as the second of four children and travelled often because his father was a general in the Air Force. Kristofferson went to Pomona College, California, where he too played football and rugby; he then went to Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship and then served in the Army, thus following this father and grandfather into the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He graduated through Ranger School in the Army, got to fly helicopters and was a captain. Krsitofferson was offered a position of teaching English in 1965 at US Military Academy in West Point New York, he was enticed by a desire to teach his passion of William Blake, but chose to head to Nashville instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNOTHING LEFT TO LOSE\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Kristofferson\u2019s best songs, there were always seekers, wastrels and broken souls looking to find love, a redemption or a cure for the hangover they received from life. The protagonist of \u201cBobby McGee,\u201d a song Kristofferson said was prompted by the Federico Fellini\u2019s \u201cLa Strada,\u201d said it best: \u2018Freedom\u2019s just another word for nothing left to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Willie Nelson, once of whom was one of Kristofferson\u2019s heroes, summed it up best when he spoke to CBS\u2019s 60 Minutes in 1999, \u201cKris brought (country music) kind of from the dark ages up to the present-day time, made it acceptable and brought great lyrics \u2013 I mean, the best possible lyrics.\u201d \u201cSimple but profound.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristofferson also recorded four albums with Rita Coolidge, with whom he had two children and was married for five years in the 70s and was again married to Jerry\u2019s first wife, Rosie, in the \u201980s and \u201890s with whom he has another son; he toured with Nelson, Cash and Waylon Jennings for six years in the 80s as a country music super group called the Highwaymen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristofferson\u2019s manly appearance landed him in the movies of \u201cCisco Pike\u201d, \u201cPat Garrett & Billy the Kid\u201d, \u201cThe Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea\u201d, \u201cConvoy\u201d, \u201cHeaven\u2019s Gate\u201d, \u201cLone Star\u201d and \u201cBlade\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristofferson was one of the notorious living during his time of stardom. He described having many girlfriends and shows he could not recall because of alcohol consumptions. He quit alcohol \u2013 but not cannabis \u2013 when a physician said that he was killing himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was fun,\u201d Kristofferson said to \u201c60 Minutes.\u201d \u201cIt was the way that I thought an artist was supposed to live. I always-ish to the utterance of Blake in giving the guessing that the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom \u2026 As far as risking one\u2019s life I think , God protects fools and songwriters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite his early success as a movie actor and singer, Kristofferson joined the United Farm Workers movement and opposed U.S. Involvement in Nicaragua and El Salvador in the 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
